Basic Ecclesial Community

What is BEC?

BEC stands for Basic Ecclesial Community. It is made up of the families/individuals belonging to a parish living within a given area. There are 18 BECs in our parish that encompasses the entire population of the Parish of Jesus Caritas. Every parishioner (father, mother, son, daughter, grandfather, grandmother, tenant, relative etc who lives within the boundaries of the Church of Jesus Caritas is a member of the BEC in his/her area where he/she resides.

New Way of Being Church

In the past our responsibility as Catholics was I, my family and my Church. But today the responsibility of being a Catholic is expanded to I, my family, my community and my Church. We praiselord can longer view ourselves as good Catholics if we are not part of the Catholic community in the area we live in. Yes, we do pray by ourselves, we pray together with our families but we also need to come together to pray and share the WORD with our community before we can come to celebrate the Eucharist in Church.

Our worship in Church is therefore a celebration of a Communion of Communities and not a celebration of individuals or individual families. When we do not participate or refuse to participate in our area BEC gatherings what we are doing is we are not responding to the call of the ‘New Way of Being Church’. This New Way of being Church is the way the disciples of Jesus lived and practiced their faith. And this is what we are being called to practice. Matt. 18:20 says ‘Where two or three are gathered in my name there I am in their midst’ – This is a call to belong to a community. This is where we bring to life the very words of Our Lord Jesus himself.

Jesus further states in Matthew 7:21, It is not anyone who says to me, "Lord, Lord," who will enter the kingdom of Heaven, but the person who does the will of my Father in Heaven.

Benefits & Joy of Belonging to a Community

When we belong to a community and participate in the monthly meetings/gatherings, prayers etccommunity we are actually working towards keeping our faith active and alive. In small groups we come together to share the word to have a better understanding, pray for one another, find reasons to celebrate events and end up building a strong bond of friendship with one another. In times of crises, we can depend on the community to respond to our needs.

It also makes it much easier as a community to work for charitable causes such as visiting an orphanage, Old folks home, home for handicapped etc. How much can we do on our own or would we even take the trouble to plan such activities on our own? But by belonging to a Christ-Centered Community we can make many good things happen which can bring about a great sense of relief to those in need and a greater sense of satisfaction to us for being able to respond to such needs.

Being Catholic is a Responsibility

Being a Catholic is not only a privilege but it is a privilege that comes with responsibility. This responsibility is about living in harmony with the community, coming together to share the WORD as a community, doing works of charity as a community etc. There may be some in our community, who are lonely, in need of friendship, immobile etc who would appreciate a visit from a friend or someone from the Church; this is where the BEC can respond not only to Catholics but others as well. We can recall the word of Our Lord, Jesus himself in the Bible when he said ‘I was naked and you did not clothe me, I was hungry and you did not feed me, I was in prison and you did not visit me …..’ In small groups such as BECs we can respond to the needs of society more easily in showing love, concern, care and praying for each other.

Pope John Paul II in his "Mission of the Redeemer" 1990 said, "Today Family Life and Christianity are being challenged by worldly influence. BECs are proving to be good centers for Christian formation and Missionary outreach which are signs for vitality within the Church and a solid starting point for a New Society based on a civilization of Love."

Through the BECs correct information on Church matters, activities, issues whether political or social are conveyed to the community so that the parishioners receive the correct understanding before jumping to any wrong conclusions e.g. the "Allah" issue.

So Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus, you can see and understand from these that being committed to our area BEC is not an option but a priority. The BEC is a reality and a priority of the Catholic Church and it is here to stay; it is up to us, the Catholic community, to choose whether we want to be a part of it or not. And, if we are going to be a part of it then we must make the time to attend all activities connected with our area BECs and contribute towards its growth and development so that our communities become a truly dynamic and vibrant part of the society we live in and in this way they will all know that we are Christians by the way we live.
